Jerry Reshew’s report on the 2011 International Steamup

Before getting to the meat of this document  I would be negligent if I did not thank you for coming to Mississippi and participating in this event. It was great fun to be part of it and I hope that when we do it again next year that you will again be among the attendees. You make it all happen and your good natured participation in all of our activities gives the Steamup its character, unique as it is.

Our major confusion this time was the Friday lunch - the Country Club had somehow missed the date and we had to improvise quickly - it was a smash hit ! Our Clack Valves and Cornets Steam Band performed while the volunteer staff prepared the catered food and the overwhelming response was extremely positive.

Our activities were truly all encompassing. From HO live steam, to Murray’s charming antique steamers, to spring wound to Mamods, and of course those huge “K some things.”  Everything went along with extreme grace and good fun was had by all participants.

Carol Homuth and his volunteer staff kept the Flea Market running and most of us spent some money on things that we absolutely needed.

The first question that comes to mind is “how many people showed up ? “ 168 of you actually were here, the no-shows were 13 and we had 19 walk-ins in this total.

“Where did you come from ?” Lets look at the state by state numbers first :

ALABAMA-2, ARKANSAS-2, ARIZONA-1, CALIFORNIA-10, COLORADO- 2, FLORIDA-20, GEORGIA- 9, IOWA-1, INDIANA-  2, ILLINOIS- 6, KANSAS- 2 ,KENTUCKY-1, MARYLAND- 4, MICHIGAN-6, MISSISSIPPI-4, MISSOURI- 2, NEBRASKA-1, NEW JERSEY-2, NEW YORK- 2 ,NEVADA-1, NORTH CAROLINA-2, OHIO-1, OKLAHOMA- 2, PENNSYLVANIA-3, SOUTH CAROLINA- 3, SOUTH DAKOTA- 1, TENNESSEE-1, TEXAS-12, UTAH-1, VIRGINIA- 3, VERMONT-1, WASHINGTON-2,WISCONSIN-1. Our International visitors came from CANADA-9, GREAT BRITAIN-2, TRINIDAD-1, PERU-1

TRULY AN INTERNATIONAL AND INTERSTATE GATHERING!

The perennial question arises as we near the end of a Steamup - “where is the stuff “ This alludes to the dwindling supply locker. Just so that you can get your arms around this , here is what we had on hand when it all started :

  • 120 gallons of distilled water

  • 108 Primus 220 gram cans of butane mix

  • 144 containers of Korean butane

  • 48 qts of alcohol

  • 5 boxes of Esbit pellets

YOU GUYS USED IT ALL !!

Our financial guru wants me to keep tabs on this stuff , but I’ll just leave it to you - use everything up and have a good time - we’ll do as we’ve always done.

The week was fun for most, frustrating for some, but it was what it was and we’ll do it again next year. The Mamod activity was surprisingly popular and we’ll do it again since I still have the sign.

Please come again,

Jerry
