DB Br 01

The Class 01 2'C1 (4-6-2) express locomotives were the first standard design locomotives built for the German Federal Railway (Deutsche Reichsbahn changed to Deutsche Bundesbahn in 1951).   Before the Federal Railway (Reichsbahn) was established in 1924, there had been eight railways in Germany; Preussen, Bayern, Sachsen, Wuerttenberg, Baden, Hessen, Mecklenburg and Oldenburg.  However, the locomotives of each railway had no common specifications.  After unification of the railways took place, the locomotive engineers undertook a study to determine on a standardization of the numerous different types of 'Pacific' locomotives, and the result was the Br01 - Br is the German abbreviation for Baureihe - locomotive class.

A total of 321 of the Br0-1 series were manufactured between 1924 and 1938.  Aster has chosen as its prototype an example of the most popular version locomotive, 001 173-4 (formerly 01 173) as fitted with Witte-type smoke deflectors.
