Japan National Railways

Class 9600 No. 69632

The JNR 9600 was the first class of locomotive to evolve from a Japanese railway equipment procurement policy which required not only larger locomotives than currently used, but also production by a Japanese manufacturer.  Unique design features of the Class 9600 were a wider than usual firebox that rested on the main frames rather than fitting between the frames.  The allowed for ample generation of steam and offered the ability to convert the wheel gauge to operate on either JNR narrow gauge (3 feet 6 inches) or standard gauge track (4 feet 8.5 inches). Her profile presented a shorter than usual chimney and domes which gave her a sturdy and powerful appearance that was somewhat reminiscent of contemporary German locomotives and the British Stanier Class 8F 2-8-0.

The JNR 9600 earned the affectionate nickname of "Kyuyroku" 96 and no less than 770 were produced during the period between 1918 and 1926.  The Class 9600 operated on many lines through Japan, except for those on Shikoku Island.  About 250 standard gauge class 9600 locomotives were delivered to occupied China where they operated until the end of the war.  After the war, they remained in mainland China and Taiwan.  In Taiwan, they were re-identified as the TNR Class DT850.  The JNR 9600's remained in service in Japan until 1975 working the branch lines on Hokkaido and Kyushu Islands.
